Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
